Africa,(Daily Post). Nigeria, Niger, and Cameroon's joint military forces said on Sunday that they had killed more than 100 Islamist insurgents, including 10 commanders, in recent weeks.
Ground anti-terrorism operations in the Lake Chad region have been stepped up by the joint military.
In recent years, the West African Islamic State (IS-WA, ISIS-WA, or ISWAP) faction has become a strong faction and one of the most active branches of the Islamic State in the world.
Tens of thousands have been killed, millions have been displaced, and a massive humanitarian crisis has erupted in the Lake Chad Basin.
Colonel Muhammad Dole, a spokesman for the Multinational Joint Task Force, said troops had dug deep into insurgent-controlled territories in the Lake Chad region and recovered numerous armaments, food, and illegal substances.
"More than a hundred terrorists were killed in this operation, including more than ten high-ranking commanders, after destructive intelligence-led air strikes on the islands of Lake Chad by the combined air forces,"
he added.
After leader Abubakar Shekau was killed in fighting with rival ISWAP in May, Boko Haram stepped back.
Since last year, Nigeria claims that thousands of Boko Haram fighters and their families have surrendered.
The United States has played a key role in clamping down the insurgency in Africa.
The US has supplied counterterrorism and other help to governments fighting Boko Haram and ISWA, as well as being the leading humanitarian aid provider in the Lake Chad Basin.
