A convoy of US embassy officials was attacked in Nigeria, killing 2 officials and 2 policemen.
The assailants also kidnapped three persons in Tuesday's attack outside the town of Atani in the Nigerian state of Anambra two police officers and a driver.
"The outlaws executed 2 mobile police officers and 2 consular officers and burned their bodies and vehicles," authorities said, adding that the area is known for separatist violence.
It is unknown why the US Embassy personnel traveled to Anambra, as well as how many vehicles were in the convoy.
According to a police report, rescue and salvage attempts are still in progress.
During a White House news briefing on Tuesday, John Kirby, speaking on behalf of the US National Security Council, claimed that "no US citizen was in convoy, therefore no US citizen was injured."
The US State Department later issued a statement saying US diplomats are "working with Nigerian security to investigate the deadly attack."
The incident occurred at around 15.30 pm. local time on main highways.
Police in Anambra believe the incident was perpetrated by separatists as part of the ongoing campaign of terror.
