According
to the project, the railroad will run through Termez, Uzbekistan, the Afghan
provinces of Mazar-e-Sharif and Logar, and end in Pakistan at the Harlachi
border in the Kurram tribal area.
The
Trans-Afghanistan project, which would connect Uzbekistan and Pakistan's rail
networks through Afghanistan, was signed on July 18, 2023, in Islamabad,
Pakistan, in the presence of "senior" government officials from the
three countries' railways, Radio Pakistan aired the news.
The
project is expected to be finished by the end of 2027, with the railway capable
of carrying up to 15 million tons of cargo per year by 2030.
Afghanistan's
railway authority, which is led by the Taliban regime, also confirmed the
construction via social media posts.
Ishaq
Dar, the finance minister of Pakistan, and Saad Rafiq, the minister of
railways, also participated in the signing ceremony.
The
train route will run through Termez, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan's Mazar-e-Sharif
and Logar provinces, and conclude in Pakistan via the Harlachi border crossing
in the Kurram tribal region near the Afghan border.
The
416-mile (760 km) rail
connection has been projected to reduce shipping costs by at least 40% and cut
the duration of time it takes for products to travel between Pakistan and
Uzbekistan by five days.
The railroads project to boost passenger and freight services and "would contribute to regional trade and economic growth," according to the agreement.
