India, (Daily Post) - At least 22 people died when an overcrowded tourist boat capsized in the Indian state of Kerala.
As rescue attempts continued on Monday and the boat was dragged out of the muddy waters, the death toll might rise.
Abdul Nazar, Junior Superintendent of the Malappuram District Police, claims that the overloaded condition of the two-deck boat led it to capsize.
The ship was reportedly carrying 50 people, and the number of passengers was exceeding its capacity when it capsized late Sunday.
More passengers were reportedly trapped under the vessel, and rescue efforts were made difficult by the darkness.
Another police officer said, "We have found 22 bodies, including 15 women and 7 men." A rescue operation is underway.
Women and children on vacation were among the victims.
Narendra Modi, the prime minister of India, offered his sympathies and said he was "pained by the loss of lives".
