Shipwreck Near Greece Waters Wrought Havoc On Pakistani Nation

According to the reports published on Sunday, nearly 350 Pakistani nationals are among those believed to have drowned after a refugee boat capsized off the coast of Greece.

A fishing ship with about 750 men, women, and children sank in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Greece last Wednesday, five days after leaving eastern Libya for Italy. 100 of the 750 passengers on board were children.

Many migrants from Pakistan, Syria, and Egypt boarded the tragic ship to try to reach relatives in Europe after leaving their countries in dire economic situations.

With little hope of finding more victims and survivors, Greek authorities later rescued 104 people and removed 78 bodies.

At least 298 Pakistanis were killed in the shipwreck, according to reports on Sunday from Pakistani TV stations that featured interviews with the grieving relatives of the dead.

On the claimed death toll, authorities have not made any comments.

"Despite the fact that the number of people on board the boat that capsized off the coast of Greece on June 14 is unclear, various reports put it between 400 and 750," according to the UN's International Organisation for Migration and Migration.

The refugee agency announced this in a joint statement on Friday. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's office said the country would observe a national day of mourning on Monday. It did not provide information on the death toll.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, and Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, Provincial Minister of Sindh Government, expressed their condolences to the families of the victims.

Today is a day of mourning for the victims of the Greek boat disaster in Pakistan.

The national flag was also lowered on this occasion.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered an investigation into the sinking of a Greek cruise ship in the Mediterranean.

According to Chaudhary Shaukat, a local representative of Pakistan-administered Kashmir, ten suspected people smugglers "are currently being investigated for their involvement in facilitating the whole process."

A high-level committee of four was also formed to investigate the incident.
