JAKARTA, Indonesia — After a small ferry Capsized and sank near the island
of Sulawesi during the short 20-minute journey, Indonesian police recovered the
bodies of 15 passengers and are searching for 19 missing, the National
Search and Rescue Agency said on Monday.
Only six of the 40 passengers on board were believed to have survived the Sunday night crash, according to the police.
"Every one of the victims has
been identified and handed over to their families, while the survivors are now
being treated at local hospitals," a local search and rescue agency branch
correspondent confirmed.
There is still no clear explanation
for the sinking of the boat that occurred around midnight that night.
The ferry travels about one kilometer
to Muna Island, which is located about 200 kilometers south of Kendari, the
provincial place of Southeast Sulawesi.
It ought to take just 20 minutes
to go between the two little communities on each side of Mawasangka Bay.
The government asserts that searchers
used rubber boats to tour the nearby waterways and dove where the vessel sunk.
Ferry and boat accidents are common in Indonesia, an archipelago of over 17,000 islands where ferries are often utilized for transportation and safety standards are inadequate.
