ABUJA, Nigeria — At least 34 people, including seven soldiers, were killed in a bandits attack in Nigeria's northwestern state of Zamfara, vigilante chairman and villagers said.
Deadly
gun violence erupted in the village of Dan Gulbi in Maru province on Monday
afternoon, local sources told Reuters news agency.
One of the
eyewitnesses stated that "27 villagers died in the attack while seven
soldiers were ambushed on their way to assist the victims of the
attack."
The
Zamfara state police did not immediately reply to calls seeking evidence of the
incident people said.
Since the
last 3 years, gangs of highly trained bandits have wreaked havoc across
Nigeria's northwest, kidnapping thousands, murdering hundreds, and making it
hazardous to travel by road in certain places.
When
unknown terrorists attacked the convoy in late May 2023, they brutally killed 4
members of the US Embassy in Nigeria and kidnapped 3 others in Anambra
state.
Speaking
on behalf of the US National Security Council, John Kirby stated that "no
US citizen was in convoy, therefore no US citizen was injured."
