ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Eleven
workers were killed and 5 more wounded early Wednesday after a chunk of the parapet of a huge
complex near a bridge under construction on the outskirts of Pakistan's capital
Islamabad slumped due to rainfall, according to police and rescue
authorities.
The wall fell while construction workers were taking rest in their
roadside tents.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Foreign Minister Bilawal
Bhutto Zardari of Pakistan both made statements in which they expressed their
profound sadness and grief at the deaths of the workers.
The wall collapsed during the downpour in the Golra area,
according to the 1122 Ambulance Service and a local police official, and the
corpses of the deceased have been retrieved.
According to a senior police official, at least five
construction workers were also hurt.
According to officials, the rain had minimal impact on the
bridge walls, and employees were killed or injured when the walls of the
adjoining building crashed, trapping them beneath the wreckage.
