KABUL, Afghanistan — At least 30 people were killed in Afghanistan when floods caused by torrential rainfall demolished homes, the Ministry of Emergency said in a statement.
Ministry spokesman Mohammad
Rahimi said 26 deaths occurred in Jalrez district, 46 km (29 miles) east of
Kabul when rain washed away hundreds of mud-built houses.
He said that at least 40 more were missing and that at least four others were killed in Kabul.
Furthermore,
he pointed out that more than 70 persons were hurt in flood-affected
districts.
Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesman
for the Afghan Taliban, issued a statement of condolences and asked
humanitarian organizations and the government in Kabul to help the grieving and
victim families.
The previous year's monsoon
flooding in Afghanistan killed more than 200 people and destroyed hundreds of homes
and animals shelters.
