Hour Before Women's World Cup, Shooting In New Zealand Claimed 2 Lives

At 07:22 (19:22 GMT), gunfire at a construction site in the financial sector killed the gunman and six other people, including police officers.

Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said the incident will not be classified as terrorism. He said the world cup matches will go on as planned.

He assured people that the threat had subsided and that there would be no further harm as a result of the Queen Street events.

The prime minister stated that no political or ideological motivation for the act has been found. He said that the shooter was carrying a pump-action shotgun.

Mr. Hipkins thanked the "brave New Zealand policemen and women who jumped right into the shootings to save lives."

According to Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown, all officials of FIFA and the football team are safe. FIFA expressed its "deepest condolences" to the families of the victims and said it had contacted New Zealand authorities.

"The participating teams in close proximity to this incident are being supported in relation to any impact that may have occurred," according to the statement. New Zealand and Australia are hosting the 9th FIFA Women's World Cup.

Tatiana Haeni, chief athletic director of the US Women's National Soccer League, lives near the shooting site.
