More
than 1,000 people have been evacuated due to landslides and floods in South
Korea.
According to administrators, thousands of
people were evacuated from South Korea on Saturday after a hydroelectric dam
flooded and landslides triggered by a third day of torrential rains resulted in 7 fatalities, 3 missing people, and seven injuries.
Ministry of Internal Affairs and Security said, 1,567 people were evacuated throughout the affected region as of 11:00 a.m. and the number may increase if water floods a dam in North Chungcheong province.
According to provincial authorities, more than 7,000 people were subject to
evacuation orders from local authorities at different times.
At 10 a.m., the large amount of water that
the Goesan Dam could release poured into it.
With landslides, track flooding, and falling
debris threatening safety, the Korea Railroad Corp announced it would suspend
all slow trains and certain high-speed trains, while other high-speed trains
would be suspended due to slower service. A transport ministry statement
said a slow-moving train derailed late Friday after a landslide dumped gravel
and sand onto the rails in northern Chungcheong province. Although the engineer
was hurt, there were no passengers on board.
Premier Han Dak-su asked the military to
aggressively assist in rescue operations and work with government authorities
to deploy equipment and people during a meeting with government agencies on
Saturday.
