A date for a meeting
between the presidents of Syria and Turkey has been scheduled by Russia's
special presidential envoy in Syria, who said that significant effort is being
made to improve relations between the two countries.
This was discussed by
Alexander Lavrentiev in an interview with Al Arabiya.
The presence of the Turkish troops on Syrian soil, in particular, is a barrier to the normalization of ties between Ankara and Damascus, according to the Russian envoy, Agenzianova said.
Putin's
special envoy stated that progress was being made on reestablishing
international routes and that Turkey's commitment to destroying armed groups
within 6 kilometers of the M4 motorway remained in effect.
Lavrentiev continued by
highlighting the difficulty of the undertaking and how some of the challenges
are related to Turkey's relationships with the regional powers.
The defense ministers of
Russia, Syria, and Turkey met in Moscow on December 28, 2022, to try to heal
relations between Ankara and Damascus.
Attendees at the conference endorsed the creation of a tripartite committee.
Following the
summit, senior diplomats will meet to discuss the potential of talks between
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
