Wang Yi Appointed As China's New Foreign Minister

On Tuesday, highly experienced and senior diplomat Wang Yi was named China's new foreign minister, replacing Qing Gan.

Without providing further details, the authorities said Qing Gan was absent from work due to health concerns.

His meeting with EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, scheduled for July 4, was later postponed by China without explanation, sparking speculation.

However, the lack of information from his ministry led to rumors that he was being punished for political reasons or for an extramarital affair.

A former staffer to President Xi Jinping and US representative, Qin Gang assumed control of the ministry in December but hasn't been seen in public since hosting foreign diplomats in Beijing on June 25.

Qin Gang's replacement, Wang, 69, was also the person who succeeded him, serving from 2013 to 2022 while relations with rival power the United States plummeted to an all-time low, according to Beijing.

He represented Qin during his furlough and represented China at the BRICS national security advisers' conference in Johannesburg this week.

Mr. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Pakistani FM welcomed Wang Yi on his securing new position and expressed optimism for the continuation of good relations with his all-weather friend and Iron Brother China.
