The death toll from the wildfires on the island of Hawaii has risen to 55, and 1,000 people are still missing.
USA, Hawaii — The death toll from the horrific wildfires on the Hawaiian island of Maui city has risen to 55, and authorities warn the number will rise. The Mayor of Maui City has said that the historic city of Lahaina has been completely destroyed by wildfire: "Everything has perished." At a press conference late on Thursday, Maui Police Chief said, "We don't know how many people died."We just don't know how this is going to turn out. The fast-spreading fire, which started Tuesday, switched from the bushes outside the city and wreaked havoc on the ancient city of Lahaina, which served as the former seat of the Kingdom of Hawaii. It was one of three main Maui fires, all caused by dry weather, buildup of fuel, and gusts of 60 mph winds. Federal restoration funds have begun to trickle in, as have supplies and equipment, while firemen are still battling secondary flames and search and rescue crews have almost probably not discovered all of the deceased.
