The Turkish defense ministry said on Saturday that twelve Turkish troops had been killed in a gunbattle with militants of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) in northern Iraq in the past 48 hours.
The army launched airstrikes against PKK targets on Saturday, "killing" at least 13 PKK fighters in the ongoing fighting, the Turkish government circulated the news on social media.
Turkey has regularly carried out airstrikes as part of its fight against PKK terrorists in neighboring Iraq.
The number of PKK members who surrendered to security forces had reached 114 as of July 2021.
On July 24, 2021, 15 terrorists who killed two Turkish troops in the Operation Euphrates Shield zone were also killed.
Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) has been calling for a Kurdish state in Turkey for the last 40 years, their armed struggle has left over 40,000 people dead mostly civilians.
The PKK started
fighting the Turkish state in 1984 and is recognized as a terrorist group by
Turkey, the US, and the EU.
