ICJ verdict mounts pressure on Israel to mitigate civilian deaths in Gaza

Israel is under mounting pressure to avert civilian genocide in Gaza and allow humanitarian supplies after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered it to cease its genocide against Palestinians, Aljazeera reported Friday evening.

The UN court in The Hague ordered Israel to "take all measures under her authority" to stop killing Palestinians in violation of the genocide treaty in a landmark interim ruling.

Preliminary investigations report of the Committee to Protect Journalists  (CPJ) surfaced on January 23, 2024, said that at least 83 journalists and media workers had been killed since the conflict began on October 7, and more than 25,500 Palestinians were martyred in Gaza.

Cyril Ramaphosa, the president of South Africa, said on television: "Today, Israel stands before the world community, its atrocities against the Palestinians made revealed.

As a state that declares itself to be democratic and upholds the rule of law, we hope that Israel will adhere to the directives given by ICJ.

Germany, which supported Israel, as well as the EU and Turkey, all urged Israel to comply with the ICJ verdict.

The Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, showed satisfaction that the court did not call for a cease-fire.
