The death toll from severe rains that brought about floods in Brazil's southern state of Rio Grande do Sul has reached at least 80 and leaving more than 111,000 people homeless, the state government said on Sunday.
Along with the cabinet-level officials, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva landed in Rio Grande do Sul on Sunday morning for discussions with local authorities regarding relief and reconstruction efforts.
"Bureaucracy will not stand in our way of restoring the state's achievement," Lula pointed out during a press conference.
Volunteers helped trapped citizens during ongoing rescue attempts by swimming, jet skiing, and even using boats.
State governor Eduardo Leite stated, "It's a predicament situation that requires post-flood actions."One of the eyewitnesses in the state capital Porto Alegre claimed that since Friday, he and three buddies have used jet skis to rescue hundreds of people from floodwaters on nearby islands.
Severe floods have hit the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul since April 29, 2024, killing scores of people and causing major landslides and dam collapses.
It has been described as the biggest flood to hit the nation in almost 80 years, devastating infrastructure and immobilizing people.
