Following severe rains and flooding, a highway bridge partially fell apart killing 11 people in Shangluo City, China.
According to Xinhua News Agency, five vehicles were pulled out of the river after the bridge in Shangluo City collapsed at 8:40 p.m. on Friday.
Xinhua further reported that dozens of
people were missing after the bridge collapsed following heavy rains and
sudden flooding.
After the downing of the highway bridge, China's Central Television, the country's main television broadcaster (CCTV), reported that more than 30 people and a dozen cars were missing.
Because of the dire weather, the rescue operation was extended to Sunday morning.
From January 2000 to March 2012, 157 bridges were crumbled in China, China's public media reported, excluding earthquake-related incidents.
The research showed that natural calamities are mostly responsible for the bridge's collapse.
A primary cause, aside from earthquakes, is particularly the flood.
Even with China's vast and highly developed roads and overhead bridge network, incidents of these sorts have become all too prevalent.
