Winston
Raymond Peters, New Zealand's Foreign Minister said Saturday that we are "
profoundly dismayed" by Israel's Knesset voting against the creation of a
Palestinian state. The Knesset is Israel's house of representatives.
"Only a political solution, where two states can live side by side in peace and security, will end the cycle of violence," the Foreign Ministry of New Zealand said in a brief Twitter statement.
"We must not lose focus of this objective," Winston Raymond Peters added.
New
Zealand has been an important ally of the Palestinians. On the 10th of May, 2024, overnight,
the UN General Assembly voted decisively in favor of Palestine's full
membership in the United Nations, New Zealand also voted in favor of a
resolution in the UN General Assembly to boost the Palestinian role.
Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters pointed out that the
resolution strengthened Palestine's rights to participate in the activities of
the UN General Assembly while preventing Palestine as a full member of the
UN.
Palestine presently holds observer status.
According to the BBC, a proposal for full membership would need to
be accepted by the UN Security Council, where the US would most likely veto it.
