Belgium, Brussels — Ursula von der Leyen
secured a second term as head of the European Commission on Thursday, 18 July
2024 with 401 votes.
In the ballot, 284 members of the 720-member European Parliament voted against von der Leyen's bid for a five-year extension as head of the EU's powerful executive body, while 401 voted in her favor.
Von der Leyen, of the centre-right European People's Party,
received 401 votes in a secret ballot, well above the 361 votes required to be
elected, the UK-based Reuters news agency reported.
For a second term, Ursula von der Leyen will continue to lead the
Commission as Boss. She was assigned by MEPs for the first time in July 2019.
