Ammunition Factory Blast Kills 5 In Turkey

A massive explosion at a Turkish missile and explosives factory has killed five workers, officials say.

At the government-run MKE missile and explosives facility, 40 kilometers east of the Turkish capital Ankara, the incident happened on Saturday morning.

According to state media, the explosion also caused the windows of surrounding homes and apartments to break, injuring a number more persons.

The explosion was caused by an accident in the factory's dynamite department, officials said.

Regional governor Wahap Sahin said there were still no workers or staff in the wreckage, and state media said injured workers were being taken to a nearby hospital.

Some are said to be seriously injured.

"Our workers were carrying out their routine work when the explosion occurred," the official said.

"A judicial and regulatory investigation into the incident has been launched," the Department of Defense said, while district attorneys are investigating the incident.

According to a statement, Turkish President-elect Recep Tayyip Erdogan was informed about the incident by Defense Minister Yasar Güler and expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.

No other piece of information about the deceased was immediately released by the Turkish government authorities.
