At least 16 people were killed after a fire broke out at a
shopping center in the Sichuan Province of China on Wednesday.
The 14-story shopping mall is located in a high-tech region in Zigong City, Sichuan Province.
The retail store, offices, restaurants, and movie theater are all built in the shopping mall, and the fire started at the bottom of the building, according to state broadcaster CCTV.
According to Chinese news agency Xinhua, the incident
occurred at 5.50 p.m. on Wednesday.
Quickly responding to a fire call, firefighters and rescuers
evacuated 75 people safely.
Rescuers used water cannons and firefighter drones to put out the flames.
Initial inquiries suggest that ongoing work within the shopping complex was the cause of the building's fire.
The most frequent causes of these fires are carelessness and damaged gas or electrical lines Chinese officials said.
